Original damask is actually a type of fabric which uses various weaving techniques and various threads to create alternating sheens resulting in a tone-on-tone design. In original damask, the pattern was actually woven into the fabric, making the fabric reversible. A more modern adaptation would be the fabrics created on Jacquard looms. These machined damasks were less expensive and succeeded in bringing this more affordable damask to the middle class. This design is a salute to that thousand-year-old art of damask weaving.
